Recently our AWOL guide Leonard McMillan showed George and Linda from the USA a very wild and wintery Hoerikwaggo trail on Table Mountain. This is the season when Table Mountain is beckoning to the wild of heart. As the winter rains and winds wash Cape Town clean, Table Mountain flourishes, the birds fluff out their feathers for chilly splash about in the mountain rock pool baths and our local baboons saunter along misty paths high above the morning traffic.

This trail is between 1-5 days long depending on your time and travel requirements. The weather was less than conventionally perfect for walking and hiking but George and Linda had waterproof gear and suitable clothing for alternating weather conditions, good hiking boots and adventurous spirits. AWOL Tours commends them both for taking on the trail just after running and completing the comrades’ marathon. After long hours in the rain through the beautiful Cape Point Nature reserve, warm fires, cosy rooms and hearty meals were waiting for hikers at the welcoming Silvermine Cottages.

The next morning the hike continued and so did the rain, but our intrepid hikers were not at all discouraged that is until the 3rd day when the cloud cover and rain made visibility so poor that Leonard had to make a safety call and there was no hiking just resting and reading in the beautiful mountain camps.
AWOL Tours take the safety of our guests as a priority and although we ensure that all equipment is checked, the paths and trails are well known and sufficient food and water are always packed. The following link is a useful resource for hiking Table Mountain safely.
