Departing from Cape Town, the cycling itinerary introduced the group to the scenic splendour of the Cape Overberg Region including the Winelands, the quaint town of Montague in the Little Karoo to the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas. The final day’s riding concluded in Gordon’s Bay, nestled at the foot of the majestic Hottentots Holland Mountains.

When first introduced to the Blackwell party, I was surprised to see their choice of steed for this epic 18 day adventure of cycling around the Western Cape: zany little fold-up bicycles! Mike, Carolyn, Jon, Gladi and Jim, retired folks who hail from Alaska and Canada, ended up completing 700kms on these sturdy little bicycles.
The accommodation and meals were as diverse and charming as the countryside we travelled through. As with all aspects of the trip, each signature guest house was thoroughly enjoyed, thanks to our fantastic hosts.
Apart from time in the saddle, planned rest days afforded the guests the opportunity to relax and do a bit of sightseeing. Excursions included learning about the history and culture of Stellenbosch; an afternoon game drive in Bontebok National Park; visits to two botanical gardens; a hike in the dramatic Fernkloof Nature Reserve in Hermanus; a round of golf in Bonnievale; climbing the Cape Agulhas lighthouse and touching the Southern most point in Africa; as well as so much more.
The final day of departure was an emotional one and I think the ‘thank you’ card received from my new friends perfectly encapsulates our approach at AWOL Tours to hosting guests: “You were our guide first and then our friend. We appreciated your patience, exceptional knowledge, political insights and love of your country. Thanks for sharing the ride with us and especially for just being there.”
I can’t wait to share similar experiences with other adventurers to our shores!
