Winelands Mountain Biking Trail

Exploring for new mountain biking trails in the Cape Winelands is the highlight  of the job for an adventure company team. On the week-end we found a fantastic new mountain trail in the Winelands that we can’t wait to take AWOL Guests Mountain biking on.

Welvanpas farm is situated just at the foothills of Bainskloof and was once the homestead of Piet Retief, the famous Voortrekker leader. It has been his family’s estate for the past 200 years. It’s owned by Afrikaner viticulturist Dan Retief . The grand old homestead is stacked with old photos and antiques, notable among them being a huge grandfather clock; on its face a Dutch fleet at anchor which rocks gently to the pendulum’s slow rhythm.

The farm has developed several Mountain biking trails which I can highly recommend. The route starts and ends at Welvanpas farm which is nestled between the beautiful Hawekwa and Groenberg mountain ranges. It is mainly single track and winds through orchard, vineyard, waterfalls and pristine fynbos. There are three routes to choose from with different technical levels. The blue route is 10km and ideal for a nice warm up! The white route is known for its challenging single track and probably the most sheltered from the three routes. This route is 18km. The newest edition is the yellow route that takes you high up through the pine forest of the Hawekwa mountain range with a steep downfall. This route is 17 km. The swimming pool, filled with river water is there for your enjoyment afterwards as well as a good cup of coffee in the coffee shop “Die Ou Meul”

An the best part is that after a exhilarating mountain biking ride, we have an excuse to stop for some winetasting at my favourite wine estate to stock on the Diemersfontien pinotage which is famous for its Mocca coffee, dark chocolate and roasted nuts flavours that dominate the nose with a smooth silky palate and undertones of ….. do I need say more?
