I recently got the chance to visit the San Cultural and Educational Centre !Khwa ttu with my parents. Khwa ttu is situated about 70 kilometres north of Cape Town on the West Cost and surrounded by a beautiful landscape which is home to numerous indigenous plant species. AWOL Tour’s guests now have the option of combining cycling along the West Cost with a visit to Khwa ttu!

We took part at the 10o’clock guided tour and get an insight into the culture, language and traditions of the San. The drive in the open trailer which was pulled by a tractor was great fun and we enjoyed the endless vastness of the 850ha nature reserve. We could easily imagine how stunning the environment must look like in spring, when the landscape is dived into a sea of flowers. The whole area exudes an atmosphere of calming down and relaxing and it is a perfect place to switch off from the stress of everyday life. Besides we could observe several Zebras, Elands, Springboks and Bonteboks.

The tour also included a visit to a replica traditional San village and a walk on the trail. Our friendly guide showed us how to spark off a fire, reading traces and we furthermore got information about the present lives of the San people. Our tour ended after almost two hours and we had the possibility to have a closer look at the information of the photo exhibition and the craft shop. At the end of our visit we had lunch in the restaurant and once again we were fascinated by the great hospitality of every staff member. We enjoyed both the flora and fauna and the lovely and stylish decorated and furnished premises of !Khwa ttu. When we arrived Cape Town in the afternoon, we were a bit tired of the drive to the north but it was one of the highlights of my parents visit here in South Africa and I am glad that AWOL Tours works together with !Khwa ttu.
