Cape Town had a special visitor from the USA, last Sunday. The President Barack Obama, was on a state visit with his family in Africa. After a two day visit to Pretoria and Johannesburg he headed further south to Cape Town and Masiphumelele Township- where we do our Bicycle Township tours.

Upon arrival to the Mother City the Obama’s visited Robben Island. President Obama described the visit, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, as ‘deeply humbling’. It was a powerful moment seeing the first black president of America; stand in the jail of the first black president of South Africa.
The next visit was to the Desmond Tutu HIV/AIDS Youth Centre in Masiphumelele Township. It is where the Noble Peace Prize winner, together with the community, has joined forces in order to provide local youth with safe and fun development projects. And also to continue the fight against the HIV/AIDS endemic that has been problematic in South Africa for decades (but finally starting to turn the curb).
From an AWOL Tours perspective it was utterly exciting news, since Masiphumelele is the Township where we’ve been successfully been hosting our Cycle Tour for the last 10 years. Our local guide, Vivian, had the unique opportunity to get close to arguably the most influential man of the world as he spoke (and of course shared a laugh) with Archbishop Tutu.
The AWOL Tours team would’ve loved to have hiked the Obamas up Table Mountain or go around the city on our City Cycle Tour, but unfortunately time just flew by (he was only here for 24hrs). But what we can do is give our future guests a possibility to follow the ‘Obama itinerary’ while visiting Cape Town. The only thing we can’t provide is an Air Force One flight….but do come onboard for our AWOL activities.
