As is usual in the Greek culture, simple, relaxed yet elegant is what you can expect from the Greek Fisherman restaurant in Sea Point.
Located on the corner of Regent and St Andrews Road (a few hundred meters away from the promenade and on route for our City Cycle Tour) lies this charming and authentically Greek restaurant. With glowing candle lit tables, a beautiful sound of tricking fountains, and the hum of the mother city all in the courtyard of a 103-year-old building, we felt transported.
Our waiter Edward was attentive, friendly, and professional. The food was phenomenal! For starters, we shared an array of meze with delectable mussels in a tomato & feta sauce, calamari, Greek salad, grilled fish, and homemade bread (the cherry on top). For mains we enjoyed beef souvlaki (a Greek kebab) and Greek spiced grilled chicken with mushroom sauce. All the food was healthily prepared and there were vegetarian and vegan options that could easily cater for any cyclist looking for a meal after their journey.
As expected from the winner of Diners Club International’s Wine List of the Year for 4 years, the wine list was exquisite. We were unfortunately unable to get coffee due to load shedding and they only open at 12 which means no morning coffee after a cycle. Most of the restaurant is outdoors, so a little sweat won’t be an issue, but we wouldn’t recommend walking in straight off your bike in cleats and cycle shorts. Another missed opportunity is there were no bike racks. However, there is a safe underground parking area less than 50 meters up the road if you have a bike rack on your car.
It was rather noisy which took away from the Greek island feel and ambiance but none-the-less we had a marvellous time and enjoyed every bite!
Based on our cyclist friendly criteria, we give the Greek Fisherman a 3 out of 5. However, we would recommend it to anyone looking for a date night spot or on a delicious lunch stop on an adventure in the Sea Point area. Just be sure to make a reservation as it does get busy.
