Every Cape Town visitor has a bucket list of sights and adventures they hope to experience. We’ll help you tick all your boxes and more! Only the most experienced local tour guide will know about little quirks our Cape Town City Cycle Tour is hiding. Here is a list of four things to keep an eye out for on your journey through South Africa’s infamous Capital City.
The Cape Town City Hall
It’s hard work running a city as efficiently as Cape Town, and they need a place to do it. The Cape Town City Hall is a beautiful building across the road from the Castle of Good Hope. It was built in 1905 in the Edwardian style using two different kinds of stone. This makes it a must for everyone visiting Cape Town.
The Ghost Sharks by Ralph Borland
Ralph Borland, a local artist, has taken advantage of the windy city and has created five large jigsaw style sharks that float three meters above the ground and move on their pivot with the changing winds. When the wind is quite strong the sharks start ‘singing’ due to flutes placed in the gills. The combination of shivering sharks and the eerie sound is impressive and will leave any tourist with a lasting impression.
The Company’s Garden (The South African Whitehouse)
As the legislative capital of South Africa, the Houses of Parliament are an iconic must see. The original building was built in 1885 by Charles Freeman however, over the years various buildings have been added and refurbished in the Company’s Garden. These buildings offer an overwhelming timeline of historical events throughout the journey of the country becoming the Republic of South Africa.
Adderley Street Statues
Adderley Street is one of the busiest streets in the City Centre because of its connectedness to the city. The water fountains in the middle of the turning circles draw in one’s attention. But hidden under the many trees of Cape Town are a wealth of figures that pay homage to the history of Cape Town, from the first settlers like Jan van Riebeeck to remembering the fallen soldiers of WWII at the Cenotaph War Memorial.
The City of Cape Town is like no other in Africa. Its rich history is engrained in the statues and building around the city. The best way to discover all the mother city has to offer is through a guided tour of the capital’s most historical parts. So remember book an AWOL City Cycle tour the next time you are in the majestic Cape Town.
