This is the time of year, that the southern right whales visit our shores in droves to mate and calve in our sheltered shores. These whales spend most of the time in the Antarctic waters feeding on plankton, but as soon as the winter approaches they migrate to the South African coastline to mate and calve in our warmer sandy shores. AWOL can arrange include a variety of whaling experiences into your travel itinerary.
It’s quite possible to see whales breaching from False Bay whilst cycling on our Cape Peninsula tours, but we can arrange day walks up to week long hiking excursions taking you to spectacularly beautiful and isolated parts of the Cape coast to spot whales. We also can book you on boat based whale watching trip with reliable and reputable operators in Cape Town, Hermanus, Gansbaai or Plettenberg Bay. A variety of different whale and dolphin species can be seen on boat trips. My personal favourite way of getting up close and personal to these gentle giants is on a sea kayaking tour.
On one of my earlier experiences, we set out on stable sea kayaks from Plettenberg Bay to view dolphins and seals, however we came across a pod of whales. In an attempt to keep the required (by law) 200 metre distance, we tried paddling away from the whales, but one inquisitive creature had other ideas and kept approaching us, it then disappeared and as we were about to sigh with relief the water suddenly turned black underneath us,there was a loud snort and a gust of hot wind, whereupon we ended up covered with whale snot before the beast left for other adventures.
