This week AWOL Tours descended on the V&A Waterfront, bicycles in tow. Having been approached by the Waterfront to provide bicycle rental and tours for the some 22 million tourists who hit the area every year, the AWOL team sprung into action. We imported funky blue single-geared bikes from the Netherlands that, having spent their early lives roaming around Amsterdam, should be at home in the hustle and bustle of Cape Town’s vibrant Waterfront (a location made even more colourful by AWOLS’ yellow helmets supplied with bike rental)!

We researched a cycle route, incorporating all those sights which make the Waterfront and its surrounding area such a favourite with both locals and tourists; developing a ride that incorporates the old and new of Cape Town’s urban landscape, stopping by much of the Waterfront’s historical attractions, before heading out into the city, along to Mouille Point lighthouse and Green Point Stadium, for an up close look at the venue of South Africa’s epic 2010 FIFA World Cup.
We produced brochures, t-shirts, marketing boards…and kitted out our stall at the V&A information centre, (we have a prime sport between AVIS and HELI, making bicycles look like a cheap and environmentally friendly alternative form of transport – and one which doesn’t require you to conquer the Cape Town traffic or any possible fear of heights).
Finally, we were ready for our first week ‘in office’…And quite a week it’s been…
The AWOL Bikes are geared up to go and are available outside Ferryman’s pub (ready to catch all those tourists who want to work off any beers consumed with lunch); Our experienced Guides are eager and informed in all things Cape Town; And an official ‘launch’ has been planned for early January, when friends of AWOL and the Waterfront can come by and suss out our newest venture, with a promise of some food and a drink for all those adventurous enough to mount a bike and have a taste of our tour.
The AWOL team is excited! With our first few customers hailing the tour ‘fantastic’ and booking further tours with us, we know we are on the right track (no pun intended)….Please come check us out and see for yourself…
