AWOL Tours attended launch of the Green Bus service

The eco-friendly transport provider “Green Cab” launched its “Green Bus shuttle project” for the south at the Two Oceans Restaurant at Cape Point on last Wednesday, 2. March 2011. Visitors who want to go to the South can now reduce their contribution to climate change by joining the green drive with the new green shuttle service from Cape Town to Cape Point which is provided by Green Cab. AWOL Tour’s guests now have the option of using the “Green Cab” to commute to Masiphumelele to participate on our Bicycle Township Tour or possibly rent a bicycle to cycle to the Point.

In order to join the launch I went from Cape Town Station to Simonstown by train and met there both the Green Bus and other attendants. Apart from AWOL Tours most of the attendants came from guesthouses along False Bay and Cape Town. We left Simonstown at 10:30am and went directly to Cape Point where we received a warm welcome and snacks at the Two Oceans Restaurant.

SATSA president Heather Guiterez underlined Green Cab efforts and that everyone can make a change. Climate change belongs to one of our biggest challenges of our time and the tourism industry contributes to it a lot. Kevin James, founder of Global Carbon Exchange and Co-founder of SA Carbon Protocol, therefore emphasized the importance of taking responsibility and supporting eco-friendly companies. The vision Green Cab Director, Amiene van der Merwe, is the creation of a hop on and off scenario at the Cape Peninsula and to provide a particular service with the Green Bus.

Before we went back to Simonstown we had the chance to go up to the lighthouse of Cape Point via the funicular and enjoy the gorgeous view. The ride in the Green Bus, a 19-seater, was very convenient.  It runs on Liquified Petroleum Gas and Bio Diesel which both decrease harmful emissions compared to petrol and thereby a car rental. Therefore customers mitigate their carbon emissions in order to fight global warming. Green Cab provides visitors including AWOL’s guests a lower carbon option to enjoy the stunning landscape of Cape Peninsula  without feeling guilty anymore.
