This year the Cape Town AWOL hiking and cycling adventure guides are putting their experience to the test on the Cape Argus Cycle Tour. This epic cycle race takes place on the 9th March and covers 109 km of the Cape Peninsula, with many as 35 000 cyclists taking part, and is the world’s largest individually timed cycle race. The very first Argus Cycle Tour took place in 1978 to draw attention to the need for cycle paths in South Africa.
Many charities and non -profit organisations use the Argus Cycle Tour to create awareness for their various causes and this year AWOL Tours has teamed up with the South African Education Fund (SAFE), a non-profit organisation that provides bursaries for students as well as providing ongoing mentoring support. Education is a cause close to AWOL Tours heart as proceeds from our Fairtrade bicycle township tour help support The Masivelane Creche in Masiphumelele Township. Masivelane provides care and education to over 60 children in the community.
This year SAFE is changing the life of a student who has registered for an accounting diploma at University of Johannesburg and had his funding pulled at the last minute by NSFAS (South African government student loan and bursary scheme) due to lack of funds. SAFE has taken on this student recently and loves taking this awesome responsibility of supporting his students for at least 4 years of studying. For SAFE it is a matter of the heart to make sure that underprivileged kids are properly educated. As Nelson Mandela says“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”
