You don't have to be young and fit for AWOL Tours to create a holiday of a lifetime

We are an older couple and I have limited mobility. AWOL Tours were recommended to us and they have not disappointed. Despite our limitations they were able to create a bespoke itinerary for us that met our needs and matched our abilities. We have thoroughly enjoyed our South African holiday and the credit, in large part, goes to Wendy and the team at AWOL. They listened well and worked hard to ensure we were able to do all they can things we wanted in ways that worked for us. Highly recommend.

Perfect introduction to Table Mountain!

We booked AWOL tours for a hike of Table Mountain with our guide Carmen, who was such a great part of our experience! She was a wealth of knowledge, not only about the mountain, but also about Cape Town and its history. It was so great learning so much from her while on our hike. We ended up doing the India Venster loop which required some scrambling and beginner rock climbing. She expertly guided us through the more difficult portions and showed us exactly where to go to get up there safely. We kept saying afterwards well glad we were so glad she was with us on the hike. I would highly recommend this tour group!

Walking through Cape Town with an expert

I did a private walking tour in Cape Town and had a very knowledgeable und interesting guide: Derrik. He not only explained landmarks, buildings and historical events, he also gave an insight into the South African society and life in Cape Town today and in the past. We hab beautiful weather and started on Signal Hill to get an overview of the city. As a horticulturer, Derrik was a specialist for plant in the VOC Garden. All in all - recommendable tour!

Andrew took us out on well spec'd bikes, taking time to ensure the set up was right for us and safe. A beautiful ride through woods, and vineyards on relatively easy trails. Andrew's a great guide, very knowledgeable and easy going, all made for a great experience, we'll be back.

AWOL Tours staff were very attentive to our wishes and helped us to work out an itinerary to suit us and our needs as experienced hillwalkers (unlike another hiking tour operator who treated me with utter disrespect as if I were completely clueless!). While the package was not cheap, it was all-inclusive and that means ALL: transport from our accommodation and back, picnic lunch and snacks, and all water. All this plus the luxury of not being responsible for navigation made it very relaxing and worth the cost. Our guide Carmen was friendly and responsive and quietly professional. A grand day out.

We enjoyed our cycling tour a lot! We booked it for our first day in Cape Town and it gave us a nice overview of the highlights and the structure of the city. The stories were interesting and fun to listen to and the guides really made us having a good time. It gave us enough history insights to enjoy the city even more after.

Had a fabulous day with AWOL exploring Cape Town and their superb guide Rodrige. Even as a local and very critical tour operator, his knowledge wowed and amazed us.We went to some very cool and off-the-beaten places in town, which I didnt know about; even after living in the mother city since over a decade.

Our guide took us around very safe areas and stirred us away from heavy traffic areas. This something I really recommend, regardless of living here or coming on a holiday to Capetown. AWOL also offers tours in the winelands and cooking classes, which we will sign up for again for our next team building day. Thanks AWOL team for a great day.

Lucas was a terrific guide on our private tour for two. Thoroughly enjoyed the scenic ride through the various neighborhoods. Lucas did a great job of keeping us together, ensuring we were safe and spending time at the sights that were of greatest interest to us. We would recommend highly, particularly on day 1 of a stay in Cape Town. By the end of the 3.5 hours we had a much better understanding of the city and everything it has to offer!!!

Beautiful views and a wonderful guide. We first drove to Boulder Beach and were able to watch the release of penguins from a rescue group. During the drive to Cape Point, there were great vistas. We rode the bike from the points parking lot to the park exit but elected not to ride on the rode outside of the park. We had a delicious lunch at the Whole Earth Cafe and amazing views the rest of the way back to Cape Town. We enjoyed our guide Bradley. We learned a lot about the area and it's history.

This was such a beautiful bike ride! The route was very scenic. It wasn't very strenuous, but some sections were difficult to navigate. A beginner rider might find it difficult, but our guide Andy was great. He was very accommodating, helpful, knowledgeable, and a genuinely good guy. Thanks for a great tour, Andy! The location we tasted wine at was also high quality.

We recently experienced an incredible 3-hour bike tour in Cape Town, and it was an absolute highlight of our trip! Our guide, Mike, was fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about sharing the city's unique history and culture.

Sam Solo Botterlay Hills Mountain Biking Tour

I had a fantastic half day mountain ride in the Botterlary Hills with Bevan. Beautiful views to the mountains behind Stellenbosch and across to False Bay. Bevan got the level just right for me and my slightly dodgy back, so not very technical, but I still had to do some work up and down the switchbacks 🙂 We had a good laugh too, Bevan is a proper expert in all aspects of mountain biking, but carries it lightly, offers advice gently and quietly attentive – you barely notice he's looking out for you. His love of the ride is contagious and I found myself doing things I wouldn't have done on my own (but no wheelies yet 😀 ). Also the office team (thank you!) are responsive, lovely and sort everything out effortlessly. Loved it, and will be a staple for every future visit to Cape Town.

I only had a short time to visit Cape Town and decided to schedule a private hike of Table Mountain with AWOL Tours. It was absolutely worth it!! The views were incredible and Bradley was an AMAZING tour guide! We discussed at the start of the hike which route I would prefer—with his advice, we ended up hiking Kasteelspoort and I had a blast! The views were incredible and he was very patient. I truly appreciated all the little details, from the pickup/drop off at my hotel to the snacks and lunch. Although the hike got a little bit difficult at times (some steep inclines/ladders), Bradley was very knowledgeable and helped me around. I felt safe the whole time! Would highly recommend this tour!

This tour was amazing. Great weather and great tour guide. The bike riding was very moderate until we had to attack the hill. I took some great videos while riding. If I could do it all over, this would have been the first tour I booked to scope the area. Please don't make the same mistake as I did.

Fantastic cycling tour in beautiful Cape Town

This cycle tour is most definitely worth going on. Our tour guide Pedro was excellent and very knowledgeable as he guided us all around areas of Cape Town we probably wouldn't have known to visit. We all felt very safe with Pedro and had a lovely treat when we visited the beautiful coloured houses at Bo-Kaap and were presented with a lovely picnic of very tasty, home made Malay snacks from one of the residents. Would most definitely recommend this company and especially Pedro who was a pleasure to spend the afternoon with.

AWOL suggested a very good itinerary for a bespoke 2 weeks cycling trip along the Garden Route from Cape Town, ending in Port Elizabeth. Our guide, Bradley, did an excellent job in the support car, giving us directions if needed; providing snacks and drinks; taking us and the bikes between the various stages; and telling us so much about this country. We rode some beautiful sections, eg to the Cape, in the winelands, round False Bay, to Cape Agulhas, up and over the Swartberg Pass, in Tsitikama National park and near Addo NP. AWOL put us in some great accommodation and we loved the food and drink everywhere (especially at cheap prices compared to the UK).

David Mind blowing human experience and a good way to support the community

Forget about everything you think you know about townships and the cliches you saw on TV. Instead, you will meet warm and welcoming people and discover the daily life of the community as if you were part of it. I was inspired by their courage when I understood how they organize school, library, social aid etc. despite the obvious lack of resources. The cycling experience is great to move around the different parts of that big village. Our guides grew up in this area and have a lot of stories to share. The walk with them inside the maze of the unformal settlement and passing by in front of people's houses greeting at you was really fun. Important to note that I never felt awkward and never felt like we are doing a safari to see misery

This is a truly moving and mind blowing human experience that I consider a must-do to anybody coming to Cape Town

We had a day full of incredible experiences. Andy, our excellent guide, brought us to the ocean kayaking with the penguins, then we walked to the viewing area for closer looks. Next he took us to the Cape Point Lighthouse, where the views were stunning! Then we cycled for about an hour around the area. It was an awesome day! The time flew by!

We hebben gister een super leuke tour door Kaapstad gefietst. In totaal 13,5 km, was goed te doen op normale fietsen en we waren erg tevreden over het bijgeleverde kinderfietsstoeltje. Onze gids, Peter, kon veel vertellen en de stop in Bo-kaap was erg leuk en lekker. Kaapstad kent geen fietspaden, dus het fietsen over de rustige stoepen op zondagochtend was voor ons prettig.

Fietsen door een stad met een gids is altijd leuk omdat je op plekken komt waar je zelf niet snel door heen loopt. Hoewel tot nu toe alle gidsen van Awol een dikke 10 verdienden, was voor deze toer Peter echt perfect omdat hij uit zijn persoonlijke leven als Nederlander in Zuid-Afrika heel veel info over het dagelijkse leven toevoegt. Tour en gids zijn echt een aanrader!

We did the 10am morning tour and our guide was Lucas. The tour is very well organised and the communication from AWOL is excellent. The equipment is great, bikes were obviously well maintained as were the cycle helmets. They provide you with a water bottle, which is a nice touch. Lucas was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and ensured the group were safe and kept together. There were 6 of us on the tour which was a nice number. There are frequent stops , so ideal for various fitness levels. I would not hesitate to recommend this tour.

Solo Fantastic!

I have done three private tours with Awol Tours as I was visiting Cape Town by myself. The idea was to get a professional travel agency to organize some visits during my short visit in Cape Town to enjoy and see as much as possible.

What a good idea! The first tour was the Cape Peninsula Tour. My guide, Shaun, is an excellent tour guide. He knows a lot about the country, the city, the wildlife in general, the flowers, and the mountains. He is passionate about what he does and wants to share it with you. The cycling tour in the Cape of Good Hope National Park is nice as well as the cycling ride on Chapman's Peak. The van is here to pick up your bike if you don't want to cycle anymore. The flexibility is at maximum. The following day, I went to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek to visit the vineyards and taste some wines. My guide, Peter, was friendly. He talked about people's lives in Cape Town, and the history of the city. I had a lovely time, cycling in the vineyards and doing some stops for the (three) wine tastings.

My third and last day tour was a hike at Table Mountain. My guide, Andy, was born and raised in Cape Town. He kept saying that he loved his city and the people. While we were hiking, he stopped often to look at the various flowers or listened to the birds in the trees (i.e sugarbird). He loves the nature. He is a passionate tour guide. I should have taken notes 😊 but not easy when you hike.

I had a lovely time during these three days. A special thanks to Helen, behind the scenes, who organized the tours in only one week. The communication was great and smooth. As I was traveling by myself, it was an excellent idea to trust Awol Tours. I can only recommend Awol Tours.

Solo Mars Phoenix Silver Spring, Maryland Amazing and Unforgettable Hike of Table Mountain (Huriǂoaxa)

I booked the Platteklip Gorge hike which turned out to be more physically challenging than I had expected, but I managed to do it thanks to the patience and support of my wonderful guide Oliver. Everything was looked after. Oliver met me at the ferry terminal in the early afternoon following my tour of Robben Island. I had stupidly forgotten to pack sunscreen and a hat, but Oliver provided the former and did a detour to a mall so that I could buy the latter. Lunch was provided on the trail. I took so long to do the hike that we ended up catching the last cable car down, but Oliver managed to turn this into a positive by finding us a good spot to watch the sunset before driving me back to my hotel. Oliver and AWOL gave me an amazing memory of Cape Town for a lifetime that I will never forget.

Met 4 personen op de fiets door het township Masiphumelele met gids Lutho. Bijzondere ervaring en mooi om het township ook eens van binnen te bekijken – men rijdt er zo vaak via de snelweg langs. Tour duurt 3 uur en is goed georganiseerd: auto kan men parkeren net buiten het township in een afgesloten compound met bewaker. E.e.a. Is absoluut veilig en men krijgt een goed beeld van het leven aldaar: kinderopvang, scholen, bibliotheek, boodschappen, watervoorziening, etc. Verrassend is de afwisseling: er zijn redelijk comfortabele 'Mandela-houses' van steen, maar ook zeer primitieve zinkenplaat hutjes, waar men in mensonterende omstandigheden leeft. Lutho is een enthousiaste gids die uitgebreid vertelt en alle vragen graag beantwoordt. De bewoners zijn over het algemeen zeer vriendelijk en lijken positief over de getoonde belangstelling voor hun leven. Al met al een aanrader voor iedereen die wil weten hoe een township er van binnen uitziet.

Great biking along Chapmans Peak Drive

I made a private trip with Bevan, general manager of AWOL Tours, from the Waterfront to Noordhoek (and back). We took the most stunning Chapmans Peak Drive with beautiful sights. Occasionally quite hard for me (not for Bevan) but very rewarding. Had a nice coffee and ice cream on the way and some interesting talks about the influences of COVID on the tourism branch in SA. We biked on brand new Giant bikes with road tires and flat bars. All together a great experience with AWOL Tours.

Bicycle Township Tour

I felt that in order to get a better insight into Cape Town we should visit one of the townships where the vast majority of its citizens return at the end of each day. My main concern was that we would be perceived as being voyeuristic and those living in the township would resent our presence. I have no doubt that some did but I do not believe this was the case for the majority. The first step for us was to find a company that itself engaged with the local community and was respectful in its approach and AWOL met these criteria. My understanding is that the township we visited encouraged tours (not all do) believing it is important for those who live outside the townships (whether locals or tourists) to gain a better understanding of life within them. Our tour was certainly informative – we learnt about the history, the different types of housing, the neighborhoods within, the schools and clinics etc as well as the hardships. However for me the revelation was seeing the township from within rather than from the road that we had just driven along previously. From the the road you see only the corrugated iron cladding creating an impression of an uninviting (and possibly slightly scary) place. However from within you see the small shops, busy cafes and nail bars which prove that, despite the challenges, enterprise and community spirit find a way of prevailing.If You Have Only Seen A Township From The Road That Runs Past

Cape Town City Cycling Tour

We booked a bike tour just the day before and ended up getting a private tour with Peter. It was a great tour around the city – Peter is so knowledgeable and friendly. Biking was not too hard – only one area where you had to go uphill but it was manageable (I don't own a bike!) We had a great stop for some snacks that were part of the tour. We enjoyed our 3 hours with Peter and recommend this tour.

Absolutely AMAZING three days with AWOL. My husband and I and our 4 young adult children spent a few days in Cape town during our visit to South Africa. We had three separate days of activities booked with AWOL and all were fantastic. I can't say enough about our outstanding guide Bevan. He was incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating to our large family. A very kind person with a great sense of humour. He was always punctual, prepared and organized. We learned so much not just about our specific tours but South Africa's rich and complicated history, culture and language. From the very interesting and informative walking tour of downtown Cape town to hiking the Kasteelsport route of Table Mountain and a day trip to Simon's Town and Cape of Good Hope – all were unforgettable experiences. We wish we could have had Bevan the rest of our trip!

Table Mountain hike

Our guide Henk was fantastic! He was so knowledgeable about the local plants and birds. Our 10 year old son loved talking to him and finding his little secret spots with caves etc. We took the Kasteel route to the top which ended up being about 6km with a 1000 meter elevation gain over 5 hours. It was an amazing hike, but you need to be in good shape and ready to climb some rock stairs! Henk was kind enough to take some really great pictures of our family with his camera and forward them on to us. We now have net year's holiday card! We have hiked all over North America and Europe and this hike was one of our all time favorites. We were definitely happy to take the lovely cable car down at the end of the trip for the fantastic views and our tired legs.

Gentle bike ride with lots of history! My partner and I did the cycling tour with Tayce on a sunny Friday. We had such a lovely morning with lots of information and history of Cape Town along the bike ride. It was a great way to see lots of the city in a relatively short amount of time. Our guide was very personable and easy going and we learnt lots. We really enjoyed the active component of this trip and felt so safe even when going through the busy parts of the city! Fantastic guided hike of Table Mountain! We had a terrific day with Sally who led us up the Kasteelsport route of Table Mountain. She picked us up at 7 am from our hotel with packed lunches, plenty of water, and snacks. We started hiking at 7:30 and were at the top by noon with stops for eating, drinking, and photos. We learned so much about Table Mountain including the birds, plants, and surrounding areas. The views were stunning! We had shade for the first half of the hike which was nice. I would highly recommend Sally and AWOL tours! The best thing we've done in Cape Town!

"As ever, the most informative and authentic way to see anywhere is on foot or by bicycle. The cycling part is within the physical capabilities of anyone with even a modicum of fitness. You do need a basic amount of street smarts and alertness to stay with the group and watch traffic, pedestrians and other obstacles as you need to negotiate roads, tracks, intersections and footpaths, all of which you share with other users. It's not a big deal but you need to pay attention and use judgement. In return, you are experiencing Cape Town much more like a normal commuter or resident than like a tourist. Except for Niels stopping every 500m or so to tell you about stuff. Much of the content is historical but current events and more recent infrastructure is covered as well. The bikes are pretty standard hire bikes; not flash but certainly usable. The change in weather meant taking both a windbreaker and sunscreen was useful. Sunglasses mandatory for the wind and dust. "Overall, we had a really excellent experience. Our guide Dave Kruger was outstanding , very flexible to meet our needs , knowledgeable , helpful and good fun. In the morning , we cycled around 30km, through many vineyards, interesting places and wonderful scenery. Mainly in the Franschhoek area. The terrain was mainly road and dirt track , with only a few hills . We are in our late fifties and reasonably fit. This 30km morning ride perfectly suited our needs . After our morning cycle , we had various options and chose a light lunch at one of the older beautiful and peaceful Vineyards. In the afternoon , Dave again matched our needs by driving us for our wine tasting in various Stellenbosch vineyards , culminating at our favourite Villiers vineyard . The young lady who supplied our tasting was extremely informative and should be commended . We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel. "My wife and I wanted to explore the city and and safely as possible. Furthermore we only had a day to do so and didn't want to waste time aimlessly lost. We were advised on the big red bus tour but out simply this wasn't for us. So we opted for a group cycle with AWOL tours. Can honestly say that we would never have crammed in as much sight seeing in 3 hours on our own or hopping on and off a packed bus. "With only 3 days in Cape Town, we wanted to make the most of our time there. Luckily, we booked 3 days of activities with AWOL. Unluckily the weather did not cooperate but it did not affect our enjoyment at all. AWOL was quickly able to adjust our itinerary so instead of cycling in the downpour, we opted for a wine tour (by car) of the Stellenbosch area. Lots of fun. Then the next day a full day to the Cape Penninsula: visited the penguins at Boulder Beach, cycling for part of it, a short hike, and a lovely lunch. And the 3rd day again was rainy so we did our city tour by van. We were very pleased with our guide, Bevan. Lots of fun and so knowledgeable! Wish I knew half as much about our own country! Beven also gave us restaurant suggestions and both were excellent. "We had a fantastic day of biking on the peninsula, seeing ostriches, penguins, baboons and seals. The nature is spectacular! We found the whole arrangement very well thought out and prepared; we were picked up at the hotel and our guide Jeremy dropped us of with about 25k left to bike to the cape of Good Hope. From there we made a small hike across to the lighthouse and continued north for lunch at the Cape Farm House. Another short biking tour after lunch took us to the penguins in Simon´s town. Better than excellent! My wife and I had a remarkably fantastic bike tour of the city, courtesy of AWOL, led by impressively historically informed, amiably smart, downright fun and gracious guides for a very reasonable price. Bikes themselves were comfortable and in top working condition. There was one short, slightly steep incline in the colorful Bo Kaap neighborhood, for anyone concerned about such, but it led to a gently downhill end to our 4 hour tour along the coast and back to the waterfront. We cannot recommend this tour, or AWOL, more. Some city traffic to navigate, but our guide always put safety first, in both wise pre-trip instructions and even wiser en route practice. We are very grateful for AWOL's, and all of its staff's expertise, and more-than-excellent customer service (for example, a link in the reminder email the day before triggered our google map's GPS to their location on the V&A Waterfront). We had a fantastic day with our guide Bevan exploring the Cape Peninsula on bikes. We had researched similar tours and picked this one because of the bespoke nature of it i.e. being able to cycle as much or as little as we wanted to get the balance right between effort and enjoyment and as it turned out this was crucial on the day. Bevan was a brilliant guide – very knowledgeable, engaging and quickly worked out a structure for the day that suited us perfectly, including key timings of where to be and when in order to avoid the crowds but also making us feel very relaxed, at ease and well taken care of.

The penguins were a great starting point and then to Cape Point itself. After that a great cycle out of the park, up the coast including numerous encounters with plenty of wildlife and a great lunch – then back to the city made it a fantastic day that we would thoroughly recommend.

You don't need to be a budding Tour De France cyclist for this – anyone who can go a pushbike should really consider this as a great way of really experiencing the Cape Peninsula and all it has to offer. " Anton Glasglow, Scotland 23 December 2017

He himself lives in this township in the formal part and likes this place. our money will be donated to some project within this township. he will show you places where your money goes to in the formal part. then you will go to the informal part and that is a great experience. in this township in my opinion most of them are fine. they look healthy and they are happy. it is not like a zoo. you are with them, eat with them, dance with them. the children are gorgeous. they come to you and want to cuddle cause most of the time "white" people come to volunteer and the children call all people "teacher" 🙂 Christien Dec 2017

My husband and I had Jeremy from AWOL Tours as our guide for this five day hike. It would not have been possible without him as sections of the trail have changed since it was first set up about 10 years ago. So this means having someone take our gear from camp to camp as well as drive us past the now no-go areas is imperative. (Thanks Niels). We loved the walk and the accommodation is great as was Jeremy's cooking and companionship and his choice of wine! Jeremy changed the hiking on Table Mountain to suit the weather conditions. It was a really special experience getting away from the busyness of Cape Town and to experience the beautiful environment the area has to offer. The hike was quite hard at times, so do some training beforehand if you aren't young and fit like you used to be (like us!) They were very quick to respond and were very helpful with answering all my questions & helping planning our excursion. There are 900 different trails up, so I would definitely recommend a capable guide. We initially planned an early morning hike, but wanted to have sundowners at the top and cable car down, so we pushed back to a 1pm start time. This company is great bc they provide round trip transfers, light lunch, snacks, and 1.5 liters of water per person. I tend to drink a lot so brought some of my own. They also are great in telling you what to pack: backpack to help carry the load, light jacket in case it's windy at the top, hat, sunscreen, and good sneakers or hiking boots. We are a group of 8 healthy, fit men, so I asked for a moderate to difficult climb and I've got to tell you it was tough! We had 2 great guides (1 who led and 1 who held up the rear). We made it up in about 3.5hrs. It was beautiful and rewarding at the top and all along the way. Plenty of flora which they explained to us along the way. We stopped at a nice shaded area along a large dam for lunch which was a great and much needed break. When we reached the top we had some G&Ts and then waited about 45mins in line for the cable car. The line was so long we were worried we wouldn't make it down in time to make our dinner res that night, but they told us they can handle 800ppl per hour and we made it down with plenty of time to spare.

Excellent Customized Mountain Bike Experience.My husband and I knew we wanted to explore South Africa on bikes with AWOL, but we couldn't decide which tour we wanted to do until the last the day before (all of the tours sounded equally enjoyable). I had reached out to a number of different tour companies about a month before our trip and Sally was by far the most responsive and thorough explaining our different options. After we arrived in South Africa, Sally and Helen were beyond accommodating for our half day mountain bike trip (which ended with a spontaneous trip to a vineyard for a wine tasting at the end). Our guide (Bevan) was was also incredibly nice and helpful (even as I got lightheaded partway into our trip and almost passed out- completely my fault for not hydrating enough earlier that morning). Our trip was unlike other tours that we've done and it was 100% tailored to what we wanted to do. It was hands down the highlight of our entire trip to South Africa. We had such a fun time that we were hoping to do another tour (renting the full suspension mountain bikes), but our trip didn't give us enough time to do so.
